The hike begins at the car park in Melag, the last village in the Langtauferer Valley, and leads first to the Melager Alm and from there continues along the well-marked Trail No. 2 in switchbacks up to the Weißkugelhütte at 2,542 metres; from there, following a narrow path for an hour, you reach the Glacier Gate of the Langtauferer Ferner.
At the glacier mouth, where the meltwater flows out, you can hear the mighty roar and watch the icefalls.
