What is the Plamort Alpine Wall?
Tank barrier: On the Plamort plateau there is a tank barrier consisting of larch wood posts around one metre high. These were set into concrete foundations, encased in concrete and fitted with metal spikes, which earned them the name ‘dragon’s teeth’.
Purpose: The Alpine Wall, and thus also the fortifications on Plamort, were built by the fascist regime in the late 1930s to secure the border with Italy in the event of an invasion by Germany.
Bunkers: On the plateau and in the surrounding area there are further bunker complexes and machine-gun emplacements that formed part of the Alpine Wall.
History: The barriers were erected in 1938 and opened to the public following restoration work between 2001 and 2003.
Why is Plamort relevant today?
Nature experience: The Plamort plateau is a protected high moor and a natural monument that is ideal for hiking
Historical monument: The site is an important relic of the Italian Alpine Wall and is now regarded as a fascinating historical testimony to military strategies in the Alps.
Hiking paradise: The tank barriers and bunkers have become a popular destination for hikers wishing to experience history.
